Not Everybody can be a Designer Super-Star

and we shouldn't.

For a few of you, this may come as a surprise. For most of us, it is something we’ve got to realize sooner or later, and this is not a bad thing.

Breaking the Myth

Guru is a word I’ve always despised.

When I was younger I spent some time on a Buddhist monastery, trying to find desperately a guru. An enlighten being with all the answers to my many questions. A figured I imagined floating over the ground on a full-lotus position, while every moment of their existence was lived on a continuous blessed perfection of Nirvana.

Guess what?, I didn’t find them. What I found is that they where people like the rest of us. More training, better practice. But living with them every day, on a close space showed me they get mad, frustrated, cranky, and many times plain boring.

I realized there is not guru, there is not eternal genius on a perfect Instagram life. Only people appointed with enlightenment by others and sometimes themselves. And they didn’t even had to tweet it.

What is a Super-Star Anyway?

Heavy-Hitters, super-wights , silverbacks. Influencers build their tribes of followers, knitting a tight net of other influencers to help them with their image by exchanging mentions, guest invitations and quid pro-quo relationships, and as on any exclusive club, you need to know somebody on the inside  to even give you a chance to cross the door.

The Reality of Fiction

I’ve worked on small design studios, and big companies. I’ve designed for my friends, and international companies, and in all of them I’ve worked on creative and highly visible projects as well as on the everyday, often repetitive tasks that are the biggest part of our job.

Maintaining consistency for a brand, project after project, year after year, can feel constraining and mentally demanding, driving us sometimes to discouragement and burn out. But that’s most of our job, and we can do it with mastery and pride.
